     The West Warwick Cal Ripken 2009 Major Division season commenced wth three games.

Orioles 3  Red Sox 1

     In what could be a preview of this year's championship final, the Titan Sports Orioles defeated the Centreville Bank Red Sox, 3-1. 

     Led by the two hit pitching of Hunter Dean, Nick Morel, Trevor Lawton, and Ray Zincone, the Orioles managed to keep the potentially potent offense of the Red Sox in check the entire game.

     Hunter Dean, who earned the victory, allowed only one hit and struck out four batters in three innings of work.  Nick Morel allowed only one run on one hit and an error in the fourth inning.  In the fifth inning, Trevor Lawton struck out the side and Ray Zincone struck out two in a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

     For the Red Sox, starter Nick Motroni pitched well.  In two innings of work, Motroni allowed only one hit while striking out four batters.  Greg D'Ambrosca, who pitched two innings of middle relief, struck out three batters and allowed only two hits.  Tyler Boisclair struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 fifth inning.

     After allowing the Red Sox to score an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning, the Orioles scored three runs on hits by Nick Morel and Oliver Daras (triple).

     Offensively, the Orioles were led by Ray Zincone (single and one run scored), Nick Morel (single and one run scored), and Oliver Daras (one r.b.i. triple).  The Red Sox received hits from Mitchell Moore and Andrew D'ambrosca.

Athletics 7  Dodgers 1

     Led by the hitting and pitching of Evan Barrera, the WW PIC Athletics defeated the Coventry Glass Dodgers, 7-1. 

     In four innings of pitching, Barrera, who did not allow a hit, struck out 11 batters and walked five.  Matt Grenier struck out one and walked one in one inning of pitching.  Andrew In struck out two and allowed one run on one hit in the sixth inning.

     Offensively, the Athletics (last year's champions), who have gone from one of the most experienced teams to one of the most inexperienced teams, were led by Michael Carley (1/2, three runs scored, and two stolen bases), Matt Grenier (one double and two runs scored), Evan Barrera (one double, one triple, three runs scored, and 2 r.b.i.'s), Kyle Baxter (1/3, 1 r.b.i.), David DeCosta (one r.b.i.), Matt Reid (one r.b.i.), and Alex Hernandez (1/2).    The Dodgers received a hit from Rich McNeil who double and scored in the sixth inning.

Marlins 7  Yankees 6

     In the most exciting and dramatic games of the day (tying run thrown out at the plate to end the game), the Richard's Oil Marlins defeated the Gordon Orthodontics Yankees, 7-6.

     Offensively, the Yankees were received contributions from Tom Doran (one single, two walks, and one run scored), Mike Defusco (one single), Anthony Indeglia (two walks and one run scored), Caleb Hoyle (one double), Jake Woodside (two walks), Alex Nault (one walk and one run scored), Trevor Caddick (one walk and one run scored), and Alex Mulligan (two walks and two runs scored).

     Offensively, the Marlins were led by Ben Roy (one single and one run scored), Brian Moretti (one run scored), Jake Roy (3/3, three runs scored), Joe Maynard (two doubles and one run scored), Tom Peccia (1/2, one run scored), and Jon Skurka (one single). 

     If the West Warwick Wizards duplicate their first half of the league season (6-3 in league play), playoff baseball will return to McCarthy Stadium in late May.  The Wizards, who are currently ranked 8th in the Division I "playoff" rankings, won their fifth game in a row over the Eagles of Barrington, 4-1.

     Led by another solid pitching performance by Junior Amine Malki, the Wizards were able to keep the potent Eagles from getting a timely hit with runners in scoring position.  In 6 1/3 innings of work, Malki allowed just one earned run on five hits while striking out seven and walking one.  Senior Richard Lizotte earned his second save of the year when he came in the game with the tying run at the plate.  Lizotte, who only needed ten pitches, calmly struck out two batters to end the game. 

     In the bottom of the first inning, Jeff Sampaio led off with a walk, moved to second on a Aaron Richards single to left field, and scored on Tim Parente's single to left field. 

     In the bottom of the third inning, the Wizards used the "long ball" to score three runs and build a 4-1 lead.  Tim Parente led off with a single to left and scored on Richard Lizotte's double to left field.  One pitch later, Charley Parent launched a 360 foot two run home run over the left field fence for his second home run of the year.

     Offensively, the Wizards received hits from Jeff Sampaio, Aaron Richards, Tim Parente (2/3, two runs scored), Rich Lizotte (3/3, one run scored, and 1 r.b.i.), Charley Parent, and Anthony Giarusso (1/2).

     Defensively, the Wizards received the "play of the game" in the top of the third inning.  With a runner at first base, Barrington catcher Steven Crawford hit a double into left-center.  Centerfielder Tim Parente raced to the ball and made a perfect relay to shortstop Richard Lizotte, who proceeded to throw out the go ahead run at the plate for the second out of the inning.

     After taking several steps forward in their first league win of the year last week against Bain Middle School, Deering took several steps backwards in a 14-1 loss to Ferri Middle School. 

     Ferri scored 14 runs on 7 hits, 8 walks, and 2 Deering errors.

     Offensively, Deering received support from Troy Lavoie (1/2), Ryan O'Kelly (two walks and one run scored), Chris Stafford (one walk), and Joe Colanduono (r.b.i. double).

Four Run or Three Out Rule Per Inning

Continuous Batting Order (1-12)

Bunting is allowed ... no slashing

Steal of second base is fine ... ball in outfield, runner may advance to third base only.

Steal of third base is fine ... ball in outfield will become a dead ball ... no runners can advance.

On a Wild Pitch or Pass Ball, runners can not advance beyond third base. 

     West Warwick's winning streak reach four games, as they won their fifth league game of the year over the Bulldogs of Westerly, 6-2. 

     After allowing the Bulldogs to score two runs on two walks, two errors, and one single, the Wizards scored an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the first inning.  Tim Parente, who had reached on a two-out error, scored when Rich Lizotte doubled to left field. 

     In the bottom of the third inning, the Wizards tied the game on three consecutive singles by Aaron Richards, Tim Parente, and Richard Lizotte.

     After reliever, Tim Parente, struck out three batters with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, the Wizards took that momentum and scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. 

     Jeff Sampaio led off with a bunt single and advanced to third base on some "heads up" baserunning on Aaron Richards' sacrifice bunt.  After Tim Parente and Rich Lizotte walked to load the bases, Charley Parent lined a shot off a drawn-in infielder (third baseman), scoring two runs.

     In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Wizards added two additional runs to their tally to go up 6-2.  Pinch hitter Garrett DeBlois led off the inning with a single to right center.  After advancing to second on a wild pitch, DeBlois moved to third on Jeff Sampaio's single to right field.  Two outs later, Richard Lizotte lined a double over the left fielder's head, scoring DeBlois and Sampaio.

     Offensively, the Wizards received hits from Sampaio (2/4, two runs scored), Richards (1/3, one run scored), Parente (2/3, two runs scored), Lizotte (3/3, two doubles, and 4 r.b.i.'s), Parent (1/4, 2 r.b.i.'s), and DeBlois (pinch hit single).

     Defensively, the Wizards, who committed three errors in the first two innings, received solid contributions from first baseman Matt Grosso (7 assists), third baseman Chris Morrison (three assists), and left fielder Derek Hebert (four putouts).

     Despite not having his "best stuff,"  Anthony Giarusso gutted out four innings  to keep the Wizards close.  In four innings, Giarusso, who left seven runners stranded, allowed only one earned run on four walks and three hits.  Tim Parente, who pitched the fifth and sixth innings, earned the victory by striking out three batters and allowing two hits.  Pitching ace, Richard Lizotte struck out one in a scoreless seventh inning.
