Lions tame West Warwick, 5-2!
As Robert Hale once said, “It is not how you start the race or where you are during the race-it is how you cross the finish line that will matter.”
That adage would certainly apply to the Narragansett/South Kingstown Lions. After starting the season 0-5, they finished the regular season winning four of their last five games.
Their latest win came against another surging team, West Warwick, who entered the game 5-1-3 on the year.
Led by the timely hitting Sam Laurie (two-run double) and Colin Masseur (two-run single), the Lions beat WWCM, 5-2.
In the bottom of the first inning, West Warwick took an early 1-0 lead when Colby Knott singled and scored on a Sam Corrado double down the left field line.
The Lions opportunistically tied it up in the third inning when Tyler Poirier reached on an error, stole second base, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
West Warwick took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning when Kyle DaSilva lined a single to left field to score Quinn Kortick who had led the inning off with a single and moved into scoring position by stealing second.
In the top of the fourth inning, Narragansett/South Kingstown took a 3-2 lead with two runs on one error and two hits. Colin Martin reached first base on an error to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a single by Aidan Burdick and scored on Laurie’s opposite field double.
The Lions received two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning when they scored twice on hits by Burdick (lead-off double), Drew Kanaczet and Masseur (two-run single).
Narragansett received quality pitching from a quarter of pitchers (Bianco, Kielty, Quirk and McNamara). For the game, they combined to strike out five batters, walk two and allow just two earned runs on five hits.
Nick Brown started for West Warwick and allowed just one earned run on four hits in 3 2/3 innings. Calvin Battersby struck out four and allowed two runs in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Ty Condon, who threw a shutout earlier in the week, came into the game with runners at second and third and pitched out of the jam by inducing a groundout to shortstop Kyle DaSilva before striking out two batters.
