Battersby's walk-off hit leads WW to upset win over Cranston, 5-4!

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, Calvin Battersby lined a single to left field to give WWCM, a 5-4 walk-off upset victory over first place Cranston (6-2-0).

Nick Brown, who will be entering his sophomore year at WWHS, pitched a solid game against the defending state champions. In 6 2/3 innings, he allowed just two earned runs on five hits while striking out ten batters. He threw 62% of pitches for strikes.

Cranston received equally impressive pitching from starter Jacob Latek and reliever Nicholas Mason. The duo had full command of the strike zone, throwing 74 of their 111 pitches for strikes (67%). In 5 1/3 innings, Latek , struck out six, walked one and allowed just one earned run. Mason, who pitched two innings, struck two batters, intentionally walked one and allowed just one run on three hits.

West Warwick took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Liam Gravier singled, moved to second on a hit by Kyle DaSilva and later scored on a Ty Condon single to right field.

While Brown and Latek were holding each team to no runs, Cranston tied it the bottom of the fourth inning when Gian Messina singled, stole second base and scored after an error on a groundout by Mason.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, West Warwick took a 4-1 lead with three runs on three errors singles by Brendan Griffin, Liam Gravier and Calvin Battersby.

Cranston opportunistically rallied in the top of the seventh inning with three runs on four walks and a two-run single by Alex Paone.

After Battersby pitched out of jam in the eighth inning, WWCM rallied for the winning run. With one out, Gravier was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single to right field by DaSilva. After an intentional walk, Battersby lined the first pitch he saw into left field for the win.

Offensively, West Warwick received multiple hit games from LIam Gravier (3/4, three runs scored), Kyle DaSilva (3/5) and Calvin Battersby (3/5, two rbi’s).

For Cranston, they were led by John Nardolillo (2/4), Colin Blessing (2/2), Matt Talabac (1/2, one walk and one rbi).
